What pressure should my boiler be at?
Low water pressure is a very common reason for a boiler not coming on.
A gas boiler is designed to safely operate between 1-1.5 bar of pressure and an oil boiler is usually a little higher between 1.5-2 bar, you will see the pressure fluctuation either type of boiler as the water heats due to expansion so don’t be concerned. If you start to see the boiler go near 3 bar as it heats it may be time for you to give us a call as this could be a sign there is your boiler may have a faulty expansion vessel or pump. Don’t be concerned as your boiler has plenty of safety devices to keep you and your family safe until we arrive.
Why is a condensing boiler more efficient?
Condensing boilers are designed to reuse the flue gas that is created through combustion in your boiler, as the flue gas leaves the heat exchanger it passes by the cooler water returning from your radiator circuit, as it does the hot flue gas reheats the cooled water. The same way your window has condensation on it from the meeting of warm and cold elements. A non-condensing boiler loses a lot of its heat through its flue, the designers realised we could use this to our advantage and, voila, condensing boilers were born.
What is the smoke that comes out of my boilers flue?
The plume you see coming from the flue terminal is the reaction of the warm flue gas hitting cold air, this is more prominent with a condensing boiler due to the flue gas being much cooler than a conventional boiler. If its pluming nice and white it means your boiler is working efficiently, however, if you have an oil boiler that is pluming grey or black smoke, make sure you turn it off and give us a ring before it gets soot up, this is a sign the combustion is incorrect and something is wrong.
Is it best to have a combi boiler or a hot water cylinder?
That all depends on the demand of your house & family, we tailor each install to your needs, BS6700 says to allow 35-45l of hot water per person in the household. If you have more than 2 bathrooms in your house we would be looking at installing a hot water cylinder as this would give you plenty of hot water without putting too much pressure on your boiler to keep up. However, boiler design is changing so rapidly that they are putting out high litres per minute of hot water. To conclude, both are fantastic decisions in the correct property, that’s why we offer free no obligation quotes so we can ensure you get exactly what you need.
How long is the warranty on a boiler?
Warranty on boilers vary throughout manufacturers, most boilers come with between 2 & 5 year warranty usually, however, Chaplows Heating are authorised ATAG installers meaning we can offer a massive 18 year warranty with our installs of any of the ATAG range, as long as it's been serviced annually, all parts and labour are covered! Our engineers carry all the replacement parts on our vans for same day fixes which can be great on a cold Friday afternoon or for saving your Christmas day!
What can I do to save money on my oil?
Having your oil boiler regulary serviced can make a big difference to your fuel consumption, in oil or gas boilers the buildup of carbon in the combustion chamber can mean you’re heating up built up carbon deposits in your boiler instead of the heat getting straight to the water jacket. We offer a full strip down Oil boiler service with certification & safety checks to ensure your boiler is running safely & efficiently.
Why is there a bin in your logo?
Well although he does have the nickname of “dusty bin” it is in fact a hot water cylinder having a bad time of things, about ready to blow I think! However, our customers affectionately gave him his name – Dust Bin. The logo was created by our Dad when he expanded the business after our Grandad passed away in the 90’s. Our customers that have been with us for a long time will remember the relief of Dad’s old Bedford rascal van pulling up to get the heating back on for them with Dusty Bin sat proudly on the side panel.
After all these years of sitting on the side of the vans, he still stands prominent as his sons turn up to get your heating back online! Who knows what the future holds, but we do know that Dusty Bin will be here to stay!
How long will my boiler last?
Quite a few factors come into play with the lifetime of a boiler, regular servicing & health checks can make a huge difference int he performance & lifespan of your appliance. As standard, our engineers always perform a full strip-down service of your boiler and that can give us a much better idea of its condition, keeping you updated on whether it’s worth starting to fill that “Boiler Piggy Bank” or if it’s got some more years in it! Saying this, we do still service and maintain an oil-fired boiler that was installed in 1932! So there isn’t a definitive answer to this, however, you can make a big difference to it by having the boiler properly maintained.
Do I need to have an annual service on an LPG boiler?
Yes, any gas boiler will benefit from an annual service, more so with LPG boilers as the gas does burn a little less clean than natural gas, this can cause a build up of deposits in the boiler, effective performance and even stop it from working over time. We look after LPG boilers at in your house or in your caravans! Feel free to contact us to book in for a health check.
